Modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet within the tradition of African cinema
A heart-breaking love story set in a remote village in the North of Senegal. A young couple must contend with the disapproval of their remote village. Banel’s husband passes away and within the tradition she has to marry her late husbands’ brother, Adama. The young couple become inseparable but Adama neglects his duties as chief of the village.
The young couple dream to leave the village and to settle out of the village. A period of extreme drought increases the tensions in the village and their dream is thwarted. Insanity strikes and the once tender and loving whispers of ‘Banel and Adama’, more and more become to feel like a cursed mantra.
Banel & Adama is timeless love story echoing the story of Romeo and Juliet within the traditions of Africa cinema by the French-Sengalese director Ramata-Toulaye Sy. The film offers important insights into a remote community, the role of women and the consequences of climate crisis.
