The iconic 1988 Dutch pyschothriller of George Sluizer
American director Stanley Kubrick said it was “the most frightening film I have ever seen” – not a bad compliment from the director of The Shining. Disturbing, suffocating and enigmatic is this psychological thriller of Dutch director George Sluizer. The Vanishing (Spoorloos) depicts a nail-biting report, full of tension, about the disappearance of a young woman and the consequences for her partner who is left behind.
During their holiday in South France Saskia disappears at the tankstation, leaving her boyfriend Rex behind. Rex continues to obsessively look for Saskia even years later, trying to figure out what happened to her.
George Sluizer’s pyschothriller became immediately a classic during the release in 1988. It is a film adaptation of Dutch writer Tim Krabbé’s novel ‘The Vanishing’ and won a Gouden Kalf for best film. Consequently, an American remake was made (The Vanishing, 1993).
In celebration of Krabbé’s novel 40th anniversary the film is restored in 2K in collaboration with EYE, StoneRaft Films and Haghefilm.
