Stark satire on the unimaginativeness of the Mexican middle class
Amor y Matemática evolves around life in the suburbs of Monterrey, Mexico. Former boy band popstar Billy is now in his thirties and leads a quiet life wih his wife Lucia and their son. The domestic life does not suit Billy, neither does a 9 to 5 job.
Lucia works while Billy chases his entrepreneurial dreams with his brother Daniel. Billy is responsible for their son and Lucia’s beloved dog Lucas since he is home during the week. One night as he goes for a walk with Lucas, his boredom changes to anger and he releases Luca’s leash. Lucia is inconsolable and desperately looks for Lucas.
During all the drama with the dog, Billy meets his new neighbour Monica. Monica used to be a big fan of Billy’s band when she was a teenager and shows Billy her scrapbooks, to make clear she still has a crush on him. The adoration by Monica reminds Billy of his life as a musician, and his ego-stroking fans. Reminded of his passion for music, Billy starts playing on his guitar again. The bittersweet trip down memory lane leads up to a turning point and Billy starts to think about ways to break with his boring life.
A funny stylized film about prosperous people who never find the gut to do what they really want in life. A stark satire commenting on the unimaginativeness of the Mexican middle class.
